Circuit City's liquidation plans, announced in mid-January, are yet another sign of a soft American economy and are very unfortunate for the company's tens of thousands of employees.
However, as Circuit City shuts down its 567 remaining stores in the United States, it creates an opportunity for digital photographers to potentially pick up a bargain on a digital camera or camera accessories. Keep in mind that product selection will be limited.
During a visit to my local Circuit City store last night, all digital cameras were 10% discounted and camera accessories were 20%-30% discounted. However, about one-fourth of the camera models were already sold out. Obviously, my visit doesn't exactly represent a scientific survey, and the situation at your local store could be different.
In a press release, Circuit City says it expects the liquidation sales across the country to be completed by the end of March. Sales only will occur at physical Circuit City stores, as the company's Web site has shut down.
All sales will be final. Extended warranties on all products will be available, because a third-party company handles such warranties. All Circuit City gift cards must be redeemed before the liquidation sales end.
