In a world dominated by digital photography, finding film for your older camera is a difficult process. Finding instant film packs for that old Polaroid instant camera is next to impossible, as Polaroid stopped manufacturing the film in June 2008.
Despite those obstacles, not everyone is ready to give up on instant film.
A group, consisting of many former Polaroid employees, has acquired Polaroid's equipment and factory in the Netherlands with the goal of re-inventing instant film packs that will work in the vintage Polaroid instant cameras. The group wants to improve upon the old instant analog film pack, calling its work "The Impossible Project."
The group estimates it has enough funding to work for a year, and its goal is to have instant film packs available for sale by 2010.
With the dominance of digital cameras, the development deadline for the new instant film packs, and the cost of research materials, "The Impossible Project" seems like an appropriate name. It will be interesting to see whether anything "develops" from the project ... or whether the group ends up with the equivalent of a blackened, malfunctioning instant print.
