Two 16-megapixel digital cameras recently released from JAI might not be aimed at consumers, but the interesting technologies in these industrial-market cameras eventually will trickle down to consumer-level digital cameras.
The AB-1600GE is a full color model, while the AM-1600GE offers monochrome output. Both cameras can shoot at resolutions of 4872x3248 pixels, at speeds of three frames per second.
Some processing aspects of the photos are offloaded to a computer as the cameras work, which helps improve image quality. To ensure good performance in industrial settings, these JAI cameras are made to work well in harsh environments, including shock absorbing. Finally, the cameras include GigE Vision, which is a camera interface standard that allows fast transfer of image files over gigabit Ethernet communication protocols.
Such technologies are well beyond the needs of most amateur photographers today, but, in another few years, who knows? That gigabit Ethernet option would certainly make downloading photos a lot faster.
