Some photographers are adding GPS-capable hardware to their digital cameras to give themselves geotagging capabilities.
Garmin has decided to skip the middleman.
With Garmin's new touchscreen handheld GPS devices -- the Oregon 550 ($500) and the Oregon 550t ($600) -- consumers can snap photos up to 3.2 megapixels in size with the digital camera built into the GPS device. The Oregon 550 automatically adds geotagging information to the images.
Although it's tough to beat the all-in-one capabilities of the Oregon 550, its low resolution might be a problem for some users. If you're shooting quick snapshots to share with family and friends across the Internet, the Oregon 550's low-resolution images will work very well. If you want to make prints of your geotagged photos, though, you'll probably want to stick with your more powerful digital camera and its geotagging hardware.
