If this is the future of sub-$200 digital cameras, the budget-camera market is about to undergo a dramatic shift.
General Imaging, the digital camera division of GE, recently announced its GE E1250TW digital camera. At an MSRP of only $199, the E1250TW includes a 3.0-inch LCD that serves as a touch screen for interacting with the camera.
The E1250TW compares very favorably with other cameras in its price range, offering 12.2 megapixels of resolution and a 5X optical zoom lens. That touch screen LCD really sets this model apart from other beginner cameras, though. Interacting with a piece of consumer electronics through an easy-to-use touch screen is a great experience for users, especially beginners.
Touch screen LCDs in sub-$200 cameras? I feel confident in saying the beginner digital camera market will embrace that combination.

One word of caution, although the GE camera takes beautiful, sharp, great color photos, the one I bought, took movies in a .mov format. Picasa can’t play it until you download Apple software and Quicktime and those programs hijacked my computer’s movie default settings and the software is impossible to delete. Sears was good about it and gave me a full refund.
