With its recent announcement of the Lumix DMC-FZ35 fixed lens camera, Panasonic is bringing improved versatility to this segment of the market.

The Lumix DMC-FZ35, which replaces the DMC-FZ28 in Panasonic's digital camera lineup, features an 18X optical zoom lens that also offers some wide angle capabilities. The DMC-FZ35 also can shoot HD video with a dedicated video record button.

Panasonic will begin offering the DMC-FZ35 in September with an MSRP of about $400. Personally, these types of large zoom, fixed lens cameras normally are not my favorites because of their bulky sizes and limitations versus true DSLR cameras, but the easy to use HD video is an intriguing option.
