Nikon Unveils New DIL Camera System

Nikon today has announced a new digital interchangeable lens (DIL) camera system, called the Nikon 1.

As with DIL systems from other manufacturers, the Nikon 1 system will feature small camera bodies that can accept interchangeable lenses. The Nikon 1 system is fully electronic, and it will feature high-speed autofocusing and CMOS image sensors. This is the first DIL system from Nikon, which long has been one of the world's leading DSLR manufacturers.

Nikon initially will offer two cameras in the DIL system, the Nikon J1 and the Nikon V1 (pictured here). The cameras will work with 1 Nikkor lenses, and Nikon plans to introduce a lens mount in the future that will allow legacy Nikkor lenses to work with the Nikon 1 DIL cameras.

I'll have more details in my blog on the J1 and V1 closer to their actual release date of Oct. 20. The J1 will cost about $650 and the V1 will cost about $900, both with a starter lens.

This is an exciting announcement for those who love the idea of DIL cameras. With a company like Nikon now embracing the DIL format, its longevity is assured.
