Start preparing the obituary for film: Nikon has announced it will abandon most of its film camera business, according to Washingtonpost.com. Nikon will continue to manufacture and sell two film cameras, the professional-level F6 and the FM10 for the amateur market, and a few manual-focus lenses for those cameras.
This is just the latest sign of the surge in digital, and coinciding decline of film. Last year, Kodak halted production of black-and-white paper. Last February, digital camera sales were up, while film was down. There was even a little foreshadowing of Nikon's decision when, in June 2004, the company announced it was shifting its focus on digital.
