Top 5 Student Cameras (2003)

Guide Picks

In choosing this year’s top 5 35mm cameras for students I looked for cameras that were rugged and give the user total manual control. Also, the cameras must be expandable, so as the student grows into a photographer the money spent on this camera and its lenses won’t be wasted in the future. Beyond these criteria, special features separated the cameras on my list from others in their class.

1) Nikon FM3A

This Nikon tops my list because of its special features such as the depth of field preview, and the mirror lockup- a feature rarely found on manual cameras. This camera is designed for the beginner and professional alike. It uses F-mount lenses, which are interchangeable with Nikon’s full line.

2) Nikon FM10

This Nikon fully manual camera is one of the most rugged cameras available. It’s similar to the classic Pentax K1000 model. One special feature on this Nikon is its depth of field preview button. It uses F-mount lenses, which are interchangeable with Nikon’s full line.

3) Pentax K1000

Still the most commonly used camera in the high school and college classroom. This camera is no longer available new, but can be bought used at most camera dealers or on eBay.

4) Pentax ZX-M

This replacement for the famous K1000 is smaller, lighter and features an electronic depth-of-field preview button. K, KA, KAF, & KAF2 mounts are interchangeable with the entire Pentax line including professional 35mm SLRs.

5) Minolta X-370s

The Minolta is another rugged camera in the older style of manual SLRs. It features interchangeable split focusing screens. It makes my top list because of its lens mount, which is compatible with many of the other Minolta 35mm SLR cameras.
