How Do I Find Digital Cameras -- Video Optional?

Digital Camera FAQ: Camera Buying Advice

By , About.com Guide

Q: I am not interested in video - a feature built into most digital cameras it seems. Is there a camera that is very good for still photos, quality, zoom, shutter speed, automatic exposure setting and speed, and subject variations that leaves out a video function? It may be as good as all the others, but cheaper? I want a digital camera, video optional! ---M.F.

That's a tough one these days. Nearly all new still image digital cameras now contain some sort of video mode. Most of the video modes are pretty basic, but they're still included in the still image cameras. Finding digital cameras -- video optional -- is very difficult ... at least among new models.

To find a still image digital camera without video capabilities, you may try looking at models that are 12-24 months beyond their introduction dates.

As an added benefit, retailers sometimes will sell such models at close-out prices, giving you a good bargain. Obviously, the downside is such models won't have the latest technologies and powerful features. Such models are a little more likely to be missing video capabilities.

However, in your case, it sounds as if you simply want a good camera without video capabilities at a low price. Buying a model that's slightly out of date will allow you to do exactly that.

Even if you cannot find a good camera without video, you'll at least have the advantage of saving money with your purchase by going with an older model.
