Are you torn between the Canon Digital Rebel or the Nikon D70? Sometimes it's hard to tell which is which if you just look over the spec sheets. Lets take a look at what these two cameras have to offer:
Price
This is a wash. Both cameras retail for $999.
Megapixels
The difference between the two is minimal. The Rebel has 6.1 megapixels, while the Nikon D70 features more with 6.3 megapixels.
Memory
The Nikon has a slight edge, accepting Compact Flash type I or II as well as Microdrive. The Rebel takes Compact Flash type I or II.
LCD screen
Another wash: both have 1.8-inch screens.
Resolution
In this category, the Rebel has a small advantage with a 3072x2048 resolution. Nikon has 3008x2000.
Size
There is not a huge distinction here either, as the Rebel is 5.6" wide by 3.9" high by 2.9 inches deep. The Nikon D70 is 5.5" wide by 4.4" high and 3.1" deep.
ISO range
The Canon Rebel has an ISO range of 100-1600 where the Nikon D70 goes from 200-1600.
Shutter speed
The Nikon D70 has a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 of a second, twice as fast as the Canon Rebels maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 of a second.
Auto-focus
The Nikon D70 has a 5-point AF system, where the Canon Rebel has a 7-point AF system.
Through this quick look you can see these two cameras are pretty similar, although each delivers a little something the other doesnt.
Shooting modes
They both offer automatic shooting modes and both include the usual suspects of Portrait, Landscape, sports and so forth.
If youre interested in a good Digital SLR these two cameras are great choices and both Canon and Nikon deliver what they promise.
If you already have Canon or Nikon lenses, that would be a real clincher. Just go with whatever camera uses those lenses.
