What DSLR Camera Accessories Are Most Important?

Digital Camera FAQ: DSLR Photography Questions

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Q: What are some of the necessary camera accessories I should be looking out for when I buy a DSLR? --A.E.

Keep in mind that there are different "levels" of digital SLR (DSLR) cameras. An intermediate DSLR, also called a fixed lens camera or a DSLR-style camera, may cost $500-$1,000, but it usually doesn't offer interchangeable lenses and other high-end, professional-level features. Traditional DSLRs are aimed at advanced users and cost $1,000 or more.

If you decide to save some money with a fixed lens camera, be sure it has plenty of variety in focal length. With a traditional DSLR, you have plenty of versatility because you can change lenses.

Beyond deciding what level of DSLR camera you want, the other features you should consider primarily center on how you'll use the camera. If you want action photos, select one that responds quickly and has good continuous shot modes. If you are still learning about photography, make sure you select a DSLR with good automatic setting options.

Be sure to budget for the numerous accessories you'll need. Additional lenses, external flash units, large memory cards, extra batteries, and other items are needed for DSLR models. One potential cost saving item for those purchasing a DSLR is that most DSLRs can re-use lenses from film SLR cameras, as long as the manufacturers match up. If you have extra lenses you want to re-use, be sure that those lenses are compatible with the DSLR you'll purchase. Check the DSLR manufacturer's Web site, which should contain a list of compatible lenses.

Finally, be sure to test any model before you buy it. Balance, weight, handgrip size, and dial location all are important with a DSLR camera. If you've never used a DSLR camera before, it's vastly different than a thin point and shoot model. Once you find a few DSLR models that meet your photography needs, test them to see which fit your hands most comfortably. Each one's design is a little different, so testing is an important, but often overlooked, step.
