How Do I Learn About Selling Photographs to Magazines?

Digital Camera FAQ: Questions on Working With Images

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Q: I recently took many photos during a sightseeing trip that I'd like to try selling photographs of the trip to a magazine for publication. Any guidance? --C.K.S.

A: Here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

First, remember that photos for a print magazine require an extremely high resolution. Something that looks good on your computer screen still might not have enough resolution to look good in print. So, if you have plans to try to submit photos to a magazine before you take your trip, be sure to shoot at the highest possible resolution.

Second, rather than making an attempt at submitting and selling photographs to random magazines, you should select a specific magazine. Check either the magazine's print issue or the magazine's Web site for specific instructions for submitting and selling photographs.
