16:9 Ratio

Definition: 16:9 ratio is a measurement of the dimensions of a photo that works well for displaying on a wide screen, such as an HDTV. The photo measures at a ratio of 16 pixels wide by nine pixels tall, which calculates to photos measuring about 1.78 times as wide as they are tall.

Other common aspect ratios for digital photography include 4:3 and 3:2. With most digital cameras, you can set the aspect ratio through the menu.
