Four Thirds System

Four Thirds System
Four Thirds organization
Definition: The Four Thirds system is a DSLR photography standard that allows for interchangeable lenses and bodies that follow the Four Thirds standard. Olympus and Kodak created the standard. The first Four Thirds DSLR camera was the Olympus E-1 in 2003.

The Four Thirds system was designed to be fully digital, unlike older SLR systems. Four Thirds lenses can be smaller because of this type of design, which results in a smaller image sensor.

Olympus and Panasonic created the Micro Four Thirds format in 2008, which will allow for even smaller cameras, similar in size to point and shoot cameras.
