Firmware

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Definition: Firmware is the embedded software permanently stored on a digital camera that makes the unit work properly. Unlike software, firmware usually isn't available on a CD or a DVD. Instead, the digital camera manufacturer installs the firmware on the camera before shipping it.

If a firmware update is needed for your digital camera, your camera's manufacturer might notify customers through the manufacturer's Web site or by e-mail. You'd download the firmware from the manufacturer's Web site to your computer. Then, when connecting your digital camera to the computer, the firmware can be installed by following your manufacturer's instructions.

For more information on finding firmware for your camera, find your camera's manufacturer through this link, and then follow the subsequent links to connect to the Support area of your camera manufacturer's Web site.
