Geotagging

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Definition: Geotagging is the process of adding geographical data to a piece of digital media, such as a digital photograph. Geotagging data can include the location, time, and altitude at the time the photograph was shot.

With digital cameras, geotagging usually occurs by connecting a GPS (global positioning system) receiver to the camera. The geotagging data is added to the photo when the image file is downloaded to a computer.
