Definition: A photo printer is a type of printer that creates prints of a specific size that's desireable for photo prints, such as 4-by-6 inches or 3-by-5 inches. Photo printers do not print other types of documents, and they usually contain memory card slots to allow direct printing from a memory card.

As do most general types of printers, photo printers usually involve inkjet printing technology. Some photo printers use special photo inks to improve photo print quality, which is measured in resolution and dots per inch (dpi).

Some photo printers are smaller than general inkjet printers and can run from battery, making them portable.

Some manufacturers of general types of inkjet printers will refer to them as photo printers, especially if they can use special photo inks or include memory card slots and small LCD screens. Such printers can also print other types of documents and can print on paper of varying sizes.
