Software

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Definition: Software is the set of instructions that your computer uses to perform a task. For example, a digital photo-editing tool, such as Adobe Photoshop, is a type of software.

Some manufacturers include software with a digital camera. The software works on your computer to perform tasks such as organizing digital photo files or editing photos.

On the digital camera itself, the instructions that make the unit work correctly are called firmware, rather than software.
