The Bottom Line

The Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera broke new ground in a market of digital cameras for kids filled with a lot of junk. The Fisher Price digital camera is rugged enough to trust with small children, it's easy for kids to hold and use.

The 640x480 resolution pictures won't be hanging in galleries soon, but they are certainly good enough to impress the kids.

My 4-year-old received the camera for Christmas, and kid-tested it with much enthusiasm. Here is a review, based on a real-life kid test of the Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera.

Pros
  • Rugged digital camera that can be abused and dropped
  • Easy for small children to hold and use
  • Accepts a memory card to expand image storage
Cons
  • Images are just 640x480 resolution
  • Actual photo taken is different than what is seen through eye pieces
  • The LCD screen images are not very clear

Description

  • It accepts easy-to-find AA batteries, but also uses a secondary round lithium battery.

Guide Review - Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera

The most striking thing about this camera is its construction. Right out of the box, you have no doubt that this camera can take a beating. It's made of soft and hard rugged plastics.

Digital camera designed for kids

This is also one of the first digital cameras that actually seems designed with a small child in mind. This camera, which is probably best suited to children ages 3 to 7, has oversized handles built for chunky little hands to grip with ease.

Instead of one optical viewer, it is designed like binoculars with two viewers so it rests easily on the face. The button is big and my daughter had no problem finding and pushing the button as soon as she snatched up the camera.

The menu has no reading, but features large color-coded buttons and a simple exclamation point if a picture has issues.

Kid-Tough Digital Camera features

No digital camera on the market today has very many features, but this camera does have a couple that are handy. The built-in 8 MP memory will hold about 60 pictures. It accepts an SD memory card for more storage, and it has a built-in automatic flash. It connects to the computer via USB cable, and it comes with a CD with photo editing software.

Problems with the digital camera

My daughter loved being able to preview images right on the camera, especially since she was accustomed to using disposable cameras. What she didn't notice, though, is the image quality on-screen is pretty bad. The images looked extremely washed out and fuzzy. While this may have been a side-effect of making a camera's most vulnerable spot more durable, it is a downside to this camera.

I also quickly noticed that the heads of people in her pictures were getting chopped off, so I decided to take a couple myself. What is seen through the viewfinders is not true to the actual image captured, as it is a larger framing area.
