Digital Photography Contest Gallery - Humming Bird Moth
Digital photo entry details:
- My Name is: Bill Vriesema
- My photo subject/title is: Hummingbird Moth
- The photo was taken with the following digital camera model: Nikon CoolPix 3200
- The shot was: candid
- The lighting was: natural & flash
- The setting was: in the garden around my house
- My experience level is: advanced hobbyist
- Comments: This was a difficult photo to take because the moth would not stay in place more than a fraction of a second. Since digital cameras have a shutter delay, and since this camera has trouble deciding where to focus when shooting close-up, I came up with a great way to "fool" the system. I pre-focused on my wrist watch around 8-10 inches from the camera. Holding the shutter button down halfway to retain the focus, I then followed the humming bird moth from flower to flower until I composed this shot (8-10 inches from the moth). I set the camera flash on "force flash," or "fill flash" to stop the action and liven up the color--even though the outdoor lighting would not ordinarily call for flash.
