In order to set the stage for your product photo or eBay auction photo, you must find a clutter and distraction free spot. If you can't get a photo box, you can create an impromptu studio rather simply. Get a table, and pin a sheet to the wall and then drape it over the table. Choose a solid color, like black, white, gray or blue. Choose a color that will contract your image. You probably don't want white as a background for paper, for instance.
The main thing is that you don't want anything in the background that will detract from your focus: the product. If you simply take the picture somewhere in your house, there is a good chance something else will get into the shot.
