My First Digital Camera: Nikon Coolpix 995

Bobcat Kitten

Do You Still Use the Camera?

Yes, often, because it's my "car camera."

Do You Remember the Camera's Price?

Around $600 (ouch!) in 2002

Describe a Favorite Photo Shot With That First Camera

The favorite was Bobcat kittens playing and lolling about outside the back door. Even though I had to shoot through a double pane door, the sharpness was fine.

My First Digital Camera's Brand, Model, and Specs

Nikon Coolpix 995, 3.3megapixel. It has most features of modern cameras although it's limited resolution by today's standards. Articulating lens, 38-152mm, f2.6-5.1, 800 ISO, WB auto bracket, noise reduction, shutter 8s to 1/2300 sec plus bulb, quick review, flash, 32.8ft, aluminum construction.

Why, How, and When I Switched From Film to Digital

I needed digital for work, taking pictures of products for customers and advertising. I loved it from the start and never turned back to film. Most important was immediate view of picture and could send to customer or others via email.

Lessons Learned

  • I learned to buy the most expensive, top of the line and not worry about it. Over the 8 years I owned it, and still love it, it was only $75/year.

Kyle Schurman, Digital Cameras Guide, says:

Great point on the cost, it doesn't seem as bad when it's spread over the lifespan of the camera! Cool photo, too!
