Describe a Favorite Photo Shot With That First Camera
A co-worker cuddling a boarder baby. The rules of the boarder baby shelter did not allow me to show the baby's face, but you could see how relaxed he was with my co-worker, even from the back.
My First Digital Camera's Brand, Model, and Specs
It was a Sony Mavica. At the time I was too green to know about models and specs! The pix looked fine on the computer, but when I went for prints, as was my habit with film, they were awful - fuzzy and unclear.
Why, How, and When I Switched From Film to Digital
The Mavica wasn't actually mine. My employer in New York had become part of a large, multinational company with headquarters in Europe. It was the year 2000, and the European hq wanted to celebrate the millenium by having all of its related companies doing volunteer work on two days in June. All the photos were to be loaded on computers and sent to the hq, so all the activities could be seen by all the subsidiaries.
It was not appealing at first, because I knew nothing about digital cameras. But a friend who was an engineer and used a Mavica in his work showed me how to use it. Having the pix on a floppy disk ready to load on the pc was good, as was being able to see and delete any photos that did not come out well.
Lessons Learned
- In cameras, one size does not fit all
- Do your research when trying new technology (for example, don't make prints from a 1 megapixel camera)
- Keep your manuals
- Don't be afraid to embrace the new
