What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

I took this photo outdoors at a quiet beach in West Cork, Ireland. The weather was dull and cloudy. It was slightly breezy and very cold. It was taken in the evening at about 5 o'clock in January, so there was very limited sunshine. I used a flash and tried to get an angle that picked up as much sun and shadows that were present. I took the photo of this subject where the sun was facing and slightly to the left, which picked up some nice shadows and reflections in the water and around the seaweed and rocks. I think this angle picked up a nice contrast of light and dark.

Advice

  • I would prefer to have taken this on a brighter day, which is rare in Ireland. I also would take it earlier in the day and perhaps taken the shot at a slightly lower angle and to the right, to frame the picture more with the stones in the bottom-right corner.

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

I chose this photo because of the variety of scenery. It includes the water, rocks, sand, and a colorful background. I like that this scene is peered at from behind the foreground stones.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

I learned the importance of light from this photo, as it is quite dull. I also learned how to frame a scene nicely with its own features. The camera angle has an important role in framing a scene. For example, if my camera were closer to the ground, I believe the photo would be better framed.
