What Type of Camera and/or Lenses Did You Use?

Nikon D300s, 70-200mm f2.8 telephoto lens

What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

(Disclaimer: Some readers might find the subject matter in this photo disturbing.)

It was morning, about 8:00 with sunny skies and good shadows. The lion was under some acacia trees, and there were some logs hiding her. So we had to slowly move our jeep into position without disturbing her eating. The lighting was so good because of the morning shadows; no need for a flash. Obviously this is an outdoor shot. I shot different exposures on a manual bracket just to see what the difference was with the natural light. But, in the end, the camera meter was optimum. Also, I shot this using spot exposure and spot focus. That way the color and focus is on your main subject.

Advice

  • Get the animal to look at you. It gives the photo a better perception, and you can see emotion on the subject. In this case, I am on top of a jeep, so the cat looking at me gives the feeling that I am closer to the ground.

What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?

It is such a random thing to find a kill in Africa. Be patient and always be ready.

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

The stare of the lion speaks to me. She is curious who I am and what I am doing there.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

Never doubt for a minute that you have a great shot just a moment away. Stay focused and shoot a few photos of the subject ... not 1,000! Plan your shots.
