"Beautiful Sunset Over Lake Michigan"

What Type of Camera and/or Lenses Did You Use?

I used the Nikon S6000 digital camera

What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

This picture was taken in the summer, around early August. It was a clear, sunny day, but there were some clouds; however, when it comes to sunset pictures like this one, I feel that clouds are a good thing since they add dimension and character to the pictures and make it fun to look at. This was obviously taken outdoors, and I used the panoramic function on my camera. With that function, the flash is not needed since it automatically adjusts to the lighting conditions.

Advice

  • Make sure when taking a panoramic photo, or any photo where a stand is not present, to keep your elbows and arms in close to keep the camera from shaking.

If You Remember, What Were the Camera's Settings?

The camera was on the panoramic setting.

What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?

I honestly did not plan on taking this photo. That day I was enjoying the summer night and just so happened to have my camera. When I decided to take the panoramic picture, I first took several other test pictures to make sure the camera would pick up the lighting.

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

I love this photo because it greatly captures the beauty of Michigan. Whenever most people think of Michigan, they think of the Great Lakes. This sunset just seems to enhance that beauty! The familiarity of the pier and silouhettes of people watching the sunset add to the "Pure Michigan" life.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

I learned that even if you aren't going to a place thinking your going to have a photo opportunity, a great picture could be waiting for you.
