What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?
It was a beautiful spring day in April 2011. We were at a family reunion in Lancaster, S.C. My family history there dates back to the 1700s, and the original house that my great-great-great-great-great grandfather built is still there, after renovations. It was a partially sunny day and we were outdoors having lunch at the pavillion. This scene just struck me as so serene, I literally jumped out of my chair to catch it. I did not use a flash and the lighting was quite good.
Advice
- There were so many of us there it was difficult to get still to take pictures. As far as duplicating a photo like this, I would have taken a little more time if possible to set up a little more. But at a family reunion what do you do? You just snap pictures and enjoy!
If You Remember, What Were the Camera's Settings?
Don't remember, I just snapped it.
What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?
I walked around to the back of the pavillion, where I could get a closer view of the birdhouse.
Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?
One reason I love this photo is it is a reminder of my ancestral home. King George III gave this as a land grant to my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather in 1772, where he had made it into a cattle farm. I can just imagine my ancestors living there, enjoying the peace and quiet.
What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?
The simplest picture can become a great photograph, especially when there is history behind it.
