What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

It was a cold, windy Thanksgiving Day. I was at the 85th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, sitting in the front row. I arrived at 5 a.m., and it was pitch black. By the time I took this picture, approximately 11:50 a.m., the sun came out and it was the perfect time to shoot "Santa." A flash was not needed.

Advice

  • I was so happy with this photo. Sitting in the front row, looking up at the floats/balloons, Santa and the sleigh came around the corner, and I was able to look up at him and shoot one of my favorite pictures.

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

This is one of my favorite pictures. You can almost pinch the rosy cheeks on Santa, and touch the beautiful NYC buildings in the background. Looking at this photo, it almost looks fake, with the magnificent colors in the sleigh and the tall, massive buildings as the backdrop.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

You have to feel it in your gut to capture a moment that you want to share with your loved ones -- the ones that were not there to enjoy it with you.

Kyle Schurman, Digital Cameras Guide, says:

Great photo, and with the sky providing a strong backlight, it wasn't easy to get the exposure right, so good job with that!
