"Nature vs. Steel"

What Type of Camera and/or Lenses Did You Use?

Canon 5D Mark II, with EF 24-105 lens

What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

It was a sunny day, late afternoon, in clear warm weather. I used no flash, trying to take advantage of the low angle of the sun lighting the edges of this sculpture-like structure, that seems abandoned to the earth around it.

Advice

  • Wait for the time of day around sunset.
  • I might have tried a filter, but I don't know if it would have created a better image.

If You Remember, What Were the Camera's Settings?

I don't remember exactly what the setting were, except that I was stopped down (around f11) trying to get as much depth of field as I could and ISO of 125.

What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?

I didn't plan this shot, came across this structure in one of the last remaining undeveloped waterfront areas in Brooklyn, NY

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

What I like about this photo is that it makes me think of another era in New York history when different commercial ideas prevailed. I also love the contrast between the beauty of man-made things and nature ... and that nature seems to be winning.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

On this day, I was trying to use depth of field and that magic hour light around sundown, trying to capture the feeling of nostalgia that that kind of light makes me think of.

Kyle Schurman, Digital Cameras Guide, says:

Thanks for taking the time to upload a very interesting looking photo - I love the contrasting objects, as you mentioned.
