What Type of Camera and/or Lenses Did You Use?

Nikon D90, with Nikkor 55-200 mm vr

What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?

The temperature was in the upper 30s, and it was a few days after a large blizzard. What attracted me to the snowy, frozen reservoir was the light under the bridge that reflected from the winter sunset. The reflection of light in the foreground of snow was magic to me.

Advice

  • The picture was taken hand held and the shutter speed was 1/400, rendering the picture a little bit darker out than it actually was. Sometimes, I find shooting at a faster shutter speed when hand holding the camera allows a darker, but sharper, picture to be rendered. I like the way the light was captured at that shutter speed. The picture had a minimal enhancement in Picnik by slightly increasing the contrast and minimally increasing the warmth of the picture.

If You Remember, What Were the Camera's Settings?

f5.6

iso 200

shutter 1/400

What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?

Framing the photo with my eyes and, of course, working with the natural light.

Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?

It displays the golden glow of fading evening winter light.

What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?

This photo brought me back to working with natural light and shooting things that are straight out of the camera, without a lot of software fixes that create something that is unreal.
