What Was the Weather Like? What Was the Lighting Like?
Late afternoon, about 4 p.m., in the late sunlight going around the deer eating in the park. I took advantage of the backlight. The deer run wild in this little park near Lake Erie in Cleveland where I live. I photograph them so often, it's like they are my pets, yet I never cross the line between their world and mine. They have given me some great photographs.
Advice
- Actually I was satisfied with the photo. I live for that moment when it all comes together in a photograph. I try not to manipulate things and usually shoot on manual and control my exposure by the power of the lighting. Good photographs require knowing what application you want to use and going about it, as well as your choice of equipment.
If You Remember, What Were the Camera's Settings?
I shoot manual, so it was f/8 at 1/300th of a second and at asa 200. The ability to use manual made this shot all the more special, because I had the control of the situation.
What Type of Planning Was Needed to Set Up This Photo?
You can't plan animals; you have to rely on them being in the right spot. You have be cautious when photographing animals, but these deer seem to trust my ability to keep my distance from them while calmly taking their photographs.
Why Is This One of Your Favorite Photos?
It is one of my favorites because it happened today, and I was there prepared to take it, with the idea of the animal and the lighting and the opportunity for me to get off several shots.
What Did You Learn About Photography With This Photo?
The camera with you is the key to photographs. I have conditioned myself to carry a camera with me at all times. The possibilities with digital and the ability to never have to worry about running out of film is like having a magic box.
