The 8X optical zoom lens in the recently announced GE E1480W digital camera should provide beginning photographers with a versatile option for shooting nature photos.
Few sub-$200 cameras can offer an optical zoom lens as large as the E1480W from General Imaging, which is the digital camera division of GE. The E1480W lens has a 35 mm equivalent of 28mm to 224 mm, giving it a good mix of wide angle and telephoto capabilities.
In addition, the E1480W offers a few other high-end features, including 14.1 megapixels of resolution, a 3.0-inch LCD, and a camera body measuring 1 inch in thickness. With an MSRP of $169.99, the E1480W should be a good value for beginning photographers.
Look for the E1480W to be available for purchase soon in three body colors: Black, red, and silver.

Just picked one up at Office Depot for $50. At $50 for 14mp and 8X I can use Sport mode to avoid the lag. This camera makes others look sick for value.
WOW! Sounds like you got a great deal on that model! Congrats!
The GE E1480W has great features and takes unbelievable photos. Picked one up on clearance at Office Depot on 26 Feb 11 for $50.00. It is a great camera! Did not find a problem with “noise” or “lag” as some have reported. After trying it for a few days, I searched Office Depot online for any other of their stores locally which may still have one in stock. I found another one at another store and purchased it for $50.00 also. Don’t understand why this model is being discontinued, except that manufacturer’s like to sell their latest models each year, and would have a hard time beating this model if they didn’t clear it out of the stores. With one as a backup, I’ll be using this camera for a long time!
I’m glad you found such a good bargain! And you’re right about manufacturers wanting to keep the newest models on the shelves … which means photographers can end up with some great deals on slightly older models, as you did.
