The Japanese camera company Hamamatsu, which specializes in devices that measure ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, has recently announced a new high-speed scientific CMOS image sensor that works especially well in low light and in ultraviolet light.

The ORCA-Flash2.8 camera uses the new image sensor for small cellular features or faint light signals, as well as high-speed photography. At full resolution, the new image sensor works at speeds up to 45 frames per second and at speeds up to 1,273 fps when focusing on a small region with a low resolution.

Although this scientific image sensor is a bit more complex than the image sensor you'd find in your typical consumer-level camera, sometimes the breakthroughs in high-end technologies will trickle down to the consumer level eventually.
