CES 2013: Two New Mirrorless Cameras Highlight Nikon's Announcements

By January 7, 2013

Nikon today has unveiled the next entries in its mirrorless DIL line of cameras, the J3 and the S1 (pictured here).

These cameras join previously released Nikon mirrorless cameras, including the J1, J2, and the V1.

Additionally, Nikon has announced two new lenses for all of its mirrorless cameras, called the 1-system. The lenses have equivalent focal lengths of 18-35mm and 27-270mm.

In all, Nikon unveiled four cameras at CES this year.

  • Coolpix S6500. This beginner-level camera ($220) includes Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • D5200. This DSLR camera has been available in Europe for a while, but it's now going to be sold in the United States for about $900.
  • J3. At $600 with a kit lens, the J3 has been slightly altered versus the J2 to move the mode dial to the top panel.
  • S1. You can shoot at up to 15 frames per second in burst mode with the S1 ($500 with a kit lens).

As these cameras and lenses enter the market officially during the next couple of months, I'll have more information on them in my blog, so keep checking. Most of the items listed here will be available for sale beginning sometime in February.
