Sigma Camera Error Messages

Learn to Troubleshoot Sigma Advanced Cameras

By , About.com Guide

Finding an error message displayed on the LCD screen of your Sigma DSLR camera isn't great news, but at least the camera is trying to tell you about the problem. That's much better than having a problem where the Sigma camera gives you no clues.

The tips listed here should help you troubleshoot your Sigma camera error messages.

  • Battery exhausted. If your battery does not have enough power remaining to perform the task that you’re attempting, you’ll see this error message. Recharge the battery. If you know the battery has a full charge already, you may have a malfunctioning battery.

  • Cannot delete image(s). This error message can refer to one of two problems. Most likely, the image you’re trying to delete is “locked,” meaning it’s been protected from accidental deletion. Work through the camera’s playback menus to remove the lock. It’s also possible that this error message refers to a malfunctioning memory card, although this problem is rare.

  • Error code (followed by number). If you see this error message, try turning the camera off and on. If the problem doesn’t fix itself, remove the battery and memory card for at least 15 minutes to reset the camera before reinserting everything and turning the camera on again. Further instances of this error message probably will require a repair center.

  • Error writing to card. To try to alleviate this error message, follow the same steps as you did with the “error code” error above.

  • Firmware error. The firmware is the program that runs the camera’s primary systems. Occasionally, Sigma releases new firmware for its cameras to adjust or fix a specific problem. If you see an error message related to a firmware problem, check with the Sigma Web site to see whether a firmware update is available to download and use with your camera.

  • Firmware update failed, memory card error. When downloading and installing new firmware for your Sigma camera, you must have a memory card in the camera with enough space to hold the firmware before it’s installed. If the memory card is incompatible or full, you’ll see this error message.

  • Focusing mode set to MF (or AF). If you’re trying to shoot a photo that requires either manual focus (MF) or auto focus (AF), and the camera’s focus mode is not set properly, you’ll see this error message. Most Sigma cameras have a dedicated button for adjusting the focus mode.

  • Image cannot be displayed on TV. If you see this error message while trying to send an image to your television from the camera, check the connections of the cables. You likely either have a cable in the wrong connector or a malfunctioning cable.

  • Incompatible file system. This error message usually refers to a problem with the memory card, where a different camera formatted the memory card, and the Sigma camera cannot read it. To fix the problem, you’ll have to reformat the memory card using the Sigma camera.

  • Popup built in flash. Some operations with your Sigma camera will not work unless the built-in flash unit that’s included with some Sigma cameras is closed or is open. If the unit is already open, just fold it down, and the error message should clear. On the other hand, if the flash is already closed, push the button near the flash unit, and it should open, again clearing the error message.

Keep in mind that different models of Sigma cameras may provide a different set of error messages than is shown here. Check with your Sigma camera user guide for a list of other error messages specific to your model of camera, or visit the Support area of the Sigma Web site.

Good luck trying to fix your Sigma camera error message!
