Memory cards, for the most part, all perform at similar levels. However, some DSLR models can make use of memory cards labeled as "professional" or "high speed" for improved performance, especially when shooting in burst mode or in video mode. You will have to spend extra for such memory cards, so be sure that your DSLR can take advantage of their power.
For the most part, those using point and shoot cameras and beginning photographers will not receive enough of a benefit from professional memory cards or high speed memory cards to justify the additional cost.
