Dual IS

By Kyle Schurman, About.com

Definition: Dual IS (image stabilization) is a digital camera technology that works to reduce blurry photos by attempting to reduce camera shake using a variety of methods. Dual IS typically refers to a digital camera that offers both optical IS and digital IS, but different manufacturers define dual IS differently.

Optical IS makes use of hardware corrections inside the digital camera to compensate for camera shake, while digital IS makes use of software corrections inside the digital camera.

Sometimes, dual IS refers to a digital SLR camera that contains image stabilization technology both in the camera body and in the interchangeable lens.
